Hold Yourself Accountable – Step 1: Throw Out the Rulebook

Everyone’s selling a roadmap:

How to lose weight…

Which diet is best…

How to start a successful business…

How to invest your money…

And with these roadmaps… There are rules to follow.

But these roadmaps are setting you up for failure!

I listened to my old coach and virtual mentor Logan Gelbrich on a podcast this week…

And he had a quote that resonated with me:

“People want to know the rules so they can push responsibility onto something or someone else.”

So true and I am guilty as well.

I have been coaching clients in nutrition and fitness for a number of years…

And I can’t count how many times I’ve heard:

“What’s the best diet? Paleo? No carb? Keto?”

They just want the templated road map that they can follow for success.

I wanted it too…

When I had 60 pounds to lose, I just wanted to know exactly what to eat – I would follow that plan to the letter.

News flash!

There is no right plan…only a starting point.

In the case of diets and losing weight…

You can start with any plan…

But you have to understand context.

Context meaning your circumstances as a human are unlike anyone else.

  • Your hormones
  • Your gut biome
  • Your heredity/DNA
  • Your fitness
  • Your job
  • Your family

The list goes on.

And all of these components make up the context in which you are living.

And trying to fit a certain rulebook into your specific context…

Is like the analogy of fitting a square peg into a round hole…

It won’t fit!

The solution?

It’s not a convenient manual of rules…

You must HOLD YOURSELF ACCOUNTABLE and realize that only you can create the rules in your rulebook!

And we do this through constant experimentation…

Trial and error.

Going back to the diets…

Choose one. Try it for a few weeks. Define the metrics of your success.

After a few weeks, evaluate what is working and what’s not working.

Make some tweaks…

Retest.

And continue this evolution.

Some experiments will push you closer to your goal…

Others, further away.

But you are accountable!

We don’t have a rulebook to blame when things don’t work the way we want.

Pro tip- this evolution of experimentation is not a quick fix…

In fact, it can take years.

And just when you think you have it figured out…

Context changes.

You get older, your job is more stressful, your sleep is reduced with kids…

As these lifestyle variables change…

So must our rulebook.

The good news here:

You have the power to unlock the code to be successful at your endeavor…

Start with action…

Experiment…

Course Correct…

Keep evolving!

You are accountable for your success or failure!
